Hello, I am a research scholar from Delhi University and I am working on a research project on Ali Shariati and his progressive, liberating and embracing perspective of the real, or better put, revolutionary Islam.
I have been reading the material that are on this site and would like to congratulate for the fantastic recollection of Mr. Shariati works that you have reproduced here under the Section Books, Speeches. Some of the books are not listed there even though they are listed in the Publications section.
Collections of lectures as "Return to the Self" & "What is to be done" are not available on the site. I need two, if not all, books as they are very relevant to my research. The Publications section does not have hyperlinks as the Books and Speeches section which makes just a list and not a store for Shariati's marvellous works.
If possible, I prefer, at my reach, the complete publications listed under the Publications section. Kindly advise where I can get the above mentioned books as they are not available anywhere else either. It would be great help if you could tell me how to access them be it online or offline. Will wait for your reply. Thanking in advance

I’m a postgraduate in Sociology at Denis Diderot University in Paris. I’ve discovered Ali Shriati with great interest and delight last days. I’m very interesting in his ideas and I want to know how he is viewed in Iran today. Are his ideas thought in the Iran universities?
For me his thought is comparable to those of Malek Bennabi, an Algerian thinker who studied in France too. Is he known –Bennabi I said- in Iran?
Furthermore I noted that Shariat participated in the Algerian revolution against France. He was teamate with Frantz Fanon and Eqbal Ahmad.

Ali Shariati was not a man for one nation or any specified community, He as his thinking is the man beyond this universe. At the time when no one speak against Shah and traditional religion ,He spoke fearlessly and with courage. His ideas and his thinking are real Islam, How can any one deny the fact that This century belongs to him. We the new generation grasping him as he is alive, And the fact is, He Remained between us. There is not question what he was ,But the question What he was not?. He lives and come again and again like "One again Abuzar". Well , you're quite right ! Depending on what you consider as being valuable a contribution in a scientific context , and regardless of the various forms of it - which renders your summary judgement rather unscholarly - there's no gainsaying the fact that he hasn't produced anything quite resembling what you have in mind as a so-called logician . Simply because he never sought to . He was a sociologist by principle , and no doubt , a shrewd one at that . Not to mention his phenomenal literary eloquence . Writing him off the way you so illogically have , is like belittling outright the works of most existential thinker-writer-philosophers , by asserting they haven't solved any problem (Like collating the works of Camus or Sartre to that of Plato , Kant or Spinoza . Or for your liking Descartes ) . Well , for one thing , they weren't Supposed to give any answers ! In fact , they were ( as all philosophers in essence do ) & ARE supposed to do the opposite ! Raise questions , and primarily help us to understand them , without attempting to riddle them out first hand . The process of finding solutions Only comes afterwards . But then Shariati wasn't even any close to them , nor the arena of philosophy , although he had certainly fed from it in ample measure . In that category , and as a person whose refreshing mental audacity , mythic existential angst , and historical sense of social responsibility , at a time of stagnated deconstructed thinking & obscurantist modernist intellectualism , redounded to the ideational enhancement of several generations of Iranian youth , I cannot but admire him . He nevertheless ,didn't even raise many questions , as a thinker-philosopher like Soroush may proficiently have , but suffice it to say that he raised a general sense of consciousness , and thirst , and provoked a notion of responsibility , for understanding social alienation . That is something one may readily disagree with , but can certainly not doubt , nor ignore . Now I admit the complications that have arisin in the wake of Shariati's death , about his political inclinations & would-be posturings toward post-revolutionary Iran's system of governence and jurisprudential-guardianship for that matter & the role of clergies and such never-ending heated debates & dilemmas . But , I rather ascribe them to immature understandings of the very core of his message .I trust even if he were physically amongst us today , he would definitely be addressing diametricaly different issues,more relevant to our times . THE POEM OF DEATH;
It was early in the morning at four, When death knocked upon a bedroom door, Who is there? the sleeping one cried. I'm Azrael, let me come inside.
At once, the man began to shiver, As one sweating in deadly fever, He shouted to his sleeping wife, Don't let him take away my life.
Please go away, O Angel of Death! Leave me alone, I'm not ready yet. My family depends on me, Give me a chance, O please prepense!
The angel knocked again and again, Friend! I'll take your life without a pain, Tis your soul Allah requires, I come not with my own desire.
Bewildered, the man began to cry, O Angel I'm so afraid to die, I'll give you gold and be your slave, Don't send me to the unlit grave.
Let me in, O Friend! The Angel said, Open the door, get up from your bed, If you do not allow me in, I will walk through it
The man held a gun in his right hand, Ready to defy the Angel's stand. I'll point my gun, towards your head, You dare come in, I'll shoot you dead.
By now the Angel was in the room, Saying O Friend! prepare for you doom. Foolish man, Angels never die, Put down your gun and do not sigh.
Why are you afraid! Tell me O man, To die according to Allah's plan? Come smile at me, do not be grim, Be Happy to return to Him.
O Angel! I bow my head in shame, I had no time to take Allah's Name. From morning till dusk, I made my wealth, Not even caring for my health.
Allah's command I never obeyed, Nor five times a day I ever prayed. A Ramadhan came and a Ramadhan went, But no time had I to repent.
The Hajj was already fard on me, But I would not part with my money. All charities I did ignore, Taking usury more and more.
Sometimes I sipped my favorite wine, With flirting women I sat to dine. O Angel! I appeal to you, Spare my life for a year or two.
The Laws of Quraan I will obey, I'll begin Salat this very day. My Fast and Hajj, I will complete, And keep away from self conceit.
I will refrain from usury, And give all my wealth to charity, Wine and wenches I will detest, Allah's oneness I will attest.
We Angels do what Allah demands, We cannot go against His commands. Death is ordained for everyone, Father, mother, daughter or son.
I'm afraid this moment is your last, Now be reminded, of your past, I do understand your fears, But it is now too late for tears.
You lived in this world, two score and more, Never did you, your people adore. Your parents, you did not obey, Hungry beggars, you turned away.
Your two ill-gotten, female offsprings, In nightclubs, for livelihood they sing. Instead of making more Muslims, You made your children non-Muslims.
You ignored the Mua'dhin Adhaan, Nor did you read the Holy Quran. Breaking promises all your life, Backbiting friends, and causing strife.
From hoarded goods, great profits you made, And your poor workers, you underpaid. Horses and cards were your leisure, Money making was your pleasure.
You ate vitamins and grew more fat, with the very sick, you never sat. A pint of blood you never gave, Which could a little baby save.
O Human, you have done enough wrong, You bought good properties for a song. When the farmers appealed to you, You did not have mercy, this is true.
Paradise for you? I cannot tell, Undoubtedly you will dwell in hell. There is no time for you to repent, I'll take your soul for which I am sent.
The ending however, is very sad, Eventually the man got very mad, With a cry, he jumped out of bed, And suddenly, he fell down dead.
O Reader! Take moral from here, you never know, your end may be near, change your living and make amends, or heaven, on your deeds depends.

Dear Dr. Shariati I wish I were alive when you were. I was born in 1981. However, in your speeches, I believe that you have hit the nail right on the head. You are spot on when you say that the clerical people are not the only ones who should learn and teach Islam. You are spot on, when you say that the mission of a shieh, is not to question small facts, but to search for truth and justice. This was true in your time, and is even truer now. Sadly though, Iran has now got rulers who sell the true value of religion, and use it to cover up their dictatorship. They kill those who dare to question their ways, just like Islam was killed by those who used it in the times of Hazrat Ali, and Hazrat Muhammad. They torture those who fight for justice and for the oppressed. And worst of all, they STILL call themselves Muslims. I wish you were alive, for I know that you would know what to say to stop the barbaric rulers of Iran. If you could only see what they do in the name of religion, I would not be surprised if you yourself wanted to kill them ... for what Iran's religious rulers have done to the oppressed and to political prisoners for the last 22 years, can indeed only be summed up ... as a genocide against Iran's beautiful, young, red roses.

Hi, I'm from Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia. I've read a lot of Dr.Shariati writing,his thinking, vision and keeps some of his books in my safekeeping. May Allah s.w.t. bless Dr.Shariati for all his efforts and bestowed martydrm to him for his struggle towards Iran Islamic Revolution. I'm admire his view on the sociology, history, antropology,ethnology,psikolology, political,Islam etc aspects, the way he looks on the people, religion and society. I also heard he is the one who translated Dr.Frantz Fanon's book, the African most greatest revolutionary "The Wretched Of The Earth" to Persian language which has become one of the references for Iranian revolutionery ideology. The most Dr.Shariati writing that admire me is "The Role of The Muslim Scholar" which has been translated to Malay language sometime in 80's. Other books that I've read is "Religion vs. Religion", "Developing Future Islam", "Hajj", "Fatima oh Fatima", "Karl Marx dan Ideologi Sesat lainnya","Red Shiasm" etc. Dr. has succeed in awaking intellectual people and unify them with uelama as they are the one who awaking people of Iran before the real revolution. May Allah s.w.t give him paradise for all his kindness that he make for people and Islamic world. Salam

Dr Shariati was a leader among Muslims. In my eyes he was smarter than today’s religious rulers of Iran. It is a real shame that Khatami uses Dr. Shariati to promote democracy. Kahtami is a snake just like all the other rulers of Iran. Dr.Shariati and Pedar Taleqani warned Iranian about people who try to use Islam as a way of manipulating the country. It is a shame that the people of Iran seem to have fallen for the tricks of Khatami. The new generation of Iranian teenagers who are 22 years old or younger don’t seem to realise that Khatami was sending them when they were kids, as human waves to clear the minefields for soldiers in the Iran-Iraq war. And they all love him and think he is the answer for Iran. The only answer for Iran is the Leader of the Mojahedin Khalq Organisation Mrs Massoud Rajavi, and Maryam Rajavi. Massoud Rajavi was a student of Dr.Shariati and also a student of Pedar Taleqani. It is interesting that nobody in Iran talks about Pedar Taleqani. That is because he knows the real Islam. The regime of Iran wants to keep power on people so it keeps on barking anti-American slogans and empty rhetoric. This is how it has kept the people down over the past 22 years. Soon though, the Mojahedin will bring Iran into freedom and true Islam shall shine once again. I know for sure that Khatami cant do this. Or rather, does not want to do this.

The late Dr. Shariati's insights into the fallacies of Marxism and Western thought in general are unique and simply remarkable.However, he debases himself to the level of the Western mind-set when he states in his book "Marxism and Other Western Fallacies: An Islamic Critique," that the Indigenous people of the Americas were in a state of savagery (allegedly before the "civilized" Europeans came, I guess). Al-Salamu Alaykum, Peace Be Upon You. Salam, and Hei (in the Finnish language, people say HEI to greet each other.) I have been reading here at your site for the past three hours ! I was so thirsty for your pure water. I wish to thank you very much for bringing these treasures to the reach of people like me. I am a Jordanian, from a city named Irbid, and I come from a well known very religious family, but I have not been introduced to writings of a Man like Dr. Shariati. If I did not surf here by pure chance, I wonder how munay years would pass before I find out about a thinker named Dr. Shiriati. Was that all because I am and my family are Sunni Muslims? I hope not, and actually I am sure I feel that a great thinker like Dr. Shariati does not even give a value to such labels. Maybe the rift or the wall between me as a Sunni (Though I am not personally religious at all) and you as Shiaat is to deep or too high. I have spent most of my adult life studying and working around this world, West and East. I can easily count the names of 10 western philodsophers, and 5 ancient Arab and Muslim philosophers. I know Dr. Jaberi from Morrocco, Firas Al-Sawah from Syria, and George Tarabeeshi from Lebanon. They belong to the Western culture, in its different colors blue and red. But I did not know anything about a man like Dr. Shiriati. Why? I claim to be an intellectual, and I have read enough by any standard to justify such a claim. I am a US Graduate compuetr engineer, and I have been available with an open mind, more or less, for about 20 years now. I would have listend very carefully to such a message if it touched my ears or eyes. I can assure you. So, I am angry. Because I would have saved my self much trouble and confusion if I had heared this message 20 years ago, or 10 years ago, or even a few months ago. Maybe you think that I am exagerating, or dramatizing, but no I am not. In fact three months ago I wrote a letter to the Arab Thought Forum (headed by Prince Al-Hasan Bin Talal) calling upon them to take responsibility and to defend their culture and values. I told them that I am as a person, as a private individual, can not do it, and at the same time be a successful computer engineer. I told them I am sick and tired of having to defend my culture and religion every time I mean a new contact (especially if he is a good person, with an open mind, for otherwise I dont really care too much) I called upon them because I feel the need for a gloabl, broad cultural, religious, and intellectual dialogue across the whole spectrum of of languages, civilizations, and cultures. I feel the need, I touch it almost every day. I see it everytime I watch the news. Everytime I say where I am from, and who I am. So, where were you? Why did you let me almost believe Saddam Hussein when he told us that this revolution is actually Persian and Khomeine is only a new Kesra Anusharwan, only He is a fanatic with even far much more hate for Arabs, deep under his gnostic skin. Cant you see that intellectuals must break walls and walls before their nations rise. You did not break the walls. You had a successful revolution, but then maybe Saddam did not give you a chance to build up your conutry and your revolution. Or maybe you tried to build up your revolution in the wrong way, and mistakes can happen, ok, I understand. But Also, maybe the original sin, is this deep rift/high wall between Khomeini and Saddam. Saddam thinks, I am sure, and Khomeini too, in fact he was very very intelligent. But who caused the original sin ? The deep rift / the high wall. The (we and you) the (us and them) The original sin. I want to call it Maybe, Muawieh Ibn Abu Sufyan Ok, I can easily make my mouth dirty now with four letter words targetting his 2000 years dead bones. Does that help? I am not religious, at all, I wish I was because things would have been easier, black and white, and I would be very righteous, without too much confusion and without too much thinking. Anyway, by now, I have learned to live with my doubts. And long before I managed (through clashes and fights physical with fists and kicks and moral, and mental) and learned to live with my blood as an Arab. And I am not worried at all about the Americans and the Europeans, and all the westernised Chinese and Japanese, I know the Indians will do themselves good and do what is right, when they see it at the end. I have no problem with the Turks too, and I am sure thay all of those together ar no big problem. I can deal with them, and they do not worry me a bit, not by their weapons of mass destruction and not by their philosophies, and not by their intellectuals, and not by their claims of human rights or whatever. I know them, and I know them very well, and I know them very deep, and they have tried to brain wash me, so many times, and they have failed and they have lost the intellectual battele, and they will loose all the other battles sooner or later. What I am worried about is ( us ) becuase after I read Dr. Shariati I am sure that we are one. I am sure that Islam is far more universal than I have ever understood it. So, what to do about this is a question that will be in my mind as I read the rest of what Dr. Shariati has hidden from me for such a long time. Peace be upon us all, we, the whole world.

A site dedicated to muslim apologetics...very interesting. I suppose the fact that Shariati propogated the whole concept of the MARTYR or SHAHID is no big deal! Or the fact that he actually set the foundation for a political Islam...not imporant! Ideology is quite different from the governing of a state. The only option for Iran is a secular and pluralistic society. A society outside the box of religion, even if that religion happens to be Islam! Iran is a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society... something perhaps Mr. Shariati had forgotten in his lamentations on one religion uniting a nation. Let us wake up from our sleep and realize that this site and the site of soroush abdul karim is nothing but islamist propaganda. Buddhism never tried to "sell" itself!

There were so many people present that there was no place to sit. Everybody was listening carefully.It was the first time I was seeing so many peolpe gathered for a religious speech. At the end of his talk I started hearing mothers crying for their young kids.I asked what was happening my aunt told me that police (SAVAK) is arresting some of the students. It was perhaps the last public talk of the shahid Shariati. For those who have made such a nice effort to collect his work in this site, may allah give you the best rewards. If all muslims had learned the real dimentions of Islam the way he tried to teach us, we would not have had so many problems all over the world (kosovo, bosnia, chechnia, kashmir, afghanestan, pakistan,Iraq,Palestine, Algeria, and even Iran after revolution with the fight for the power instead of unity and failure of cultural revolution)and others to come .... The martyred Dr. Shariati tried to tell us that the key to success of muslims in the new millenium is: 1)to increase our faith to Allah by analyzing his message,learning and behaving by reading about quoran, prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and his 12 desendents. 2)Muslim unity. 3)sacrificing everything in the path of Allah like Hussein ebn Ali 4)and speaking up like zeynaab when there is oppression.

Dr. Shariati was the greatest force behind the Iranian revolution which unfortunately has gone stray since its victory. I remember how his books and lectures used to be sold out as soon as they hit the bookstores in 1977 the year before the revolution.
The young generation and the university students across Iran have come to realize what greatness True Islam has and they would embrace it with open arms. Unlike the today's situation in Iran that majority of Iranian youth have turned away from the Sonati (Fundamentalism) Islam that is being preached by the power hungry Mullahs! I honesty believe that Dr. Shariati was the best example of a forward thinking muslim Iran has ever had and it is very unfortunate that most of his work are not allowed to be published in Iran. If the rulling government of Iran is looking for a solution to bring back the younger generation of Iranians to Islamic teaching and guidance, they have no choice but to rely on likeable characters such the late Dr. Ali Shariati. May God bless his soul and may God bring the day that Dr. Shariati's books and lectures are once again distribute freely in universities and libraries across Iran. Inshaallah!

I believe Dr. Shariati was a true teacher of Islam. Unfortunately, he didn't live long enough for the muslim as well as the non-muslim world to truly recognize and admonish such a great and enlightened mind of the 20th century. Had he lived longer, I believe the people of the world in general, and the country of Iran in particular, would have been much more enlightened. I was a young man when I was exposed to his works, and it changed my life forever; For this, I thank him enormously. First of all, thank you for making it possible for all of us to quench our spiritual thirst by bringing Shariati to net. I believe that source of all knowledge are Ahl-e-Bayt (of course through Allah will). "I am the Madina(City) of knowledge, and Ali is its door" Mohammad (PBUH). Unfortunately, much of Dr. Shariati's work was translated poorly. Dr. Hamid Algar and Campbell have good translations and ctitique of Marxism. Please note Dr. Shariati was interested in the internal Dynamics of change; hence, his audiance was Iranians' search for spiritulism/Emancipation. He was not attepting to impress intelligensia or elite of the Metropolis.

Ali Shariarti is a genius - I have only read one book translated by Laleh Bakhtiar on the Muslim woman including Fatima Is Fatima. I want to read his critique on Marxism but it I understand that it is not available in English. I'm also interested in finding out more about the SBIG.

In order to introduce Dr. Ali Shariati, I wrote a small article about him in 1979 in the university newspaper and always hoped somehow he will be recognized by the people of the world and people will relize that real people still exist and get benefit from his vast knowledge and understanding the right way among all different kinds of philosophy, religious believe and missunderstanding of Islam. I am now happy to see effort is taking place. When I knew how to get in the Internet, the first thing I was looking was just type Shariati to seee if there is anything about him. Also, when I go to library I do the samething too. During the revolution of Iran I was selling his books and tapes. I have a collection of his tapes (may be all of the lectures he had and was in Hosseinie Ershad)and like to copy of any one who likes to have or if any one know how can help me to put them in the world wide web. If you nee a copy of his tape you can send blank tapes and the name of the lecture self envelope and stamp with address. I also like to know about Dr. Shariati family. How they are doing. I saw Ehsan his son early 1979 in Iran and have no news from them since that time. I appreciate if anyone knows anything about them write me an e-mail.
